Tiger-stripe figure
BRE (Building Research Establishment) is an independent, research-based consultancy, testing and training organisation, operating in the built environment and associated industries. A guide to the use of urban timber (FB 50) was written by Geoff Cooper and published by BRE on 31 July 2012.
The guide suggests that tiger-stripe figure is:
...a colour variation in oak timber caused by an infection in the living tree by a wood-rotting fungus. In the early stages of infection, the butt rot fungi, Beefsteak fungus, Fistulina hepatica, causes dark streaks to form in the main stem of oak resulting in the formation of an attractive striped figure. |
